Outward Bound is no holiday - it's an experience that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

To go Outward Bound is to accept an invitation to embark on a voyage of unexpected discovery. People from all walks of life – school goers to corporate executives - find that they can leave behind the restrictions that their daily lives impose on them and discover more within themselves than they ever dreamed of.

This is an experience that will challenge you physically, emotionally and intellectually. An adventure that will change your paradigm and leave you better equipped for and motivated to live a life never thought possible.

World Leader. Outward Bound is one of the worlds leading international non-profit experiential education organisations. It uses the outdoors and adventure activities as a profound metaphor through which to promote individual growth and community transformation.

The Courses, the Adventure. The course, which is designed to be challenging, draws from the internal strengths and resources of the students - professionals and young adults alike – they didn't even know they had.

The Adventure provides a series of experiences that take them to their perceived limits and beyond, showing them that they can do a lot more than they thought they could. Students learn about themselves and about others, they learn to rely on themselves and on each other and to find solutions even when the problems seem impossible to overcome.

They learn to persevere, to push their own perceived limitations, to strive for excellence and never to give up. Students learn that they need other people, and that the strength of a team lies in the co-operation of the people. They learn to deal with success and failure, to develop compassion and most importantly that they can make a difference.

OBSA Courses. OBSA uses direct, dramatic adventure experiences in the mountains, on the lakes and the sea, and - even briefly - in the air. On an Outward Bound course participants may find themselves hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing and doing various other group activities. Time is allowed for discussion and reflection, so that students can process their experiences and internalise their learning. Lessons learnt on Outward Bound South Africa can be transferred to their situations at home, in their schools, communities or work place

A Better South Africa. People who have gone "Outward Bound", along with those who work there, are people who make a difference. These are people who choose to perpetuate hope and help to build a better South Africa.

Outward Bound International. Today, more than 50 Outward Bound schools can be found in 30 different countries all over the world. For detailed information, see the Outward Bound International Web Site at http://www.outward-bound.org.

Outward Bound History. Outward Bound started in Britain in 1941 as a sea education school. Kurt Hahn, the founder, saw that the formal school system was not preparing young people for the hardships of life. He knew that qualities like perseverance, compassion, initiative, fitness and life experience were lacking in 'modern' young people. He saw their lack of enthusiasm, lack of care and skill, lack of adventurous spirit and lack of motivation to make a positive difference in society. So he started a school for young people where they could learn from experience, where they could experience adventure and hardships and overcome challenges, and where they could develop compassion through service to others.

Outward Bound South Africa. OBSA started in 1992. Today, OBSA operates in six of the most beautiful areas of our country. As well as impacting the corporate environment, one of OBSA's central focuses is to impact the lives of young people in South Africa who have been marginalised and disadvantaged by the political history and injustices of the past. It helps people develop life skills, compassion and a determined, positive attitude toward life and its many challenges.
